The coins issued after 1840 were with the portrait of Queen Victoria.
In 1862 the first coinage under the British Crown was issued
In 1877 Queen Victoria assumed the title of ‘The Empress of India’

4. pie, pice, naya paisa, paisa, naye paise, paise !!!

Confused about the `paise' of those days?!
 There was the pie, one-third of a pice (paisa) and so, one-twelfth of an anna. The Hindi plural `paise' for paisa (pice)  causes the confusion, pice being wrongly read as paise.

1 Rupee = 16 annas = 64 pices (paise) = 192 pie s
From 1 April 1957
1 Rupee = 100 naya paise
From 1 June 1964
1 Rupee = 100 paise


Note the spellings in the following
1 pie = 1/12 Anna (One Twelfth Anna)
3 Pie(s) = 1 paisa / pice (One Quarter Anna)
2 Half pice(s) or 2 Dhelas = 1 Pice ( one quarter Anna)
12 Pie(s) = 1Anna
4 Pice(s) = 1Anna
16 Annas = 1 Rupee
15 Rupees = 1 Mohur(Gold)
