In 1862 the first coinage under the British Crown was issued

4. pie, pice, naya paisa, paisa, naye paise, paise !!!

Confused about the `paise' of those days?!

 There was the pie, one-third of a pice (paisa) and so, one-twelfth of an anna. The Hindi plural `paise' for paisa (pice)  causes the confusion, pice being wrongly read as paise.

Dates	Currency system
From 1835	1 Rupee = 16 annas = 64 pices (paise) = 192 pie s
From 1 April 1957	1 Rupee = 100 naya paise
From 1 June 1964	1 Rupee = 100 paise

Note the spellings in the following

1 pie = 1/12 Anna (One Twelfth Anna)

3 Pie(s) = 1 paisa / pice (One Quarter Anna)

2 Half pice(s) or 2 Dhelas = 1 Pice ( one quarter Anna)

12 Pie(s) = 1Anna

4 Pice(s) = 1Anna

16 Annas = 1 Rupee

15 Rupees = 1 Mohur(Gold)
